AI and lived experience

People using services should not meet AI only after an organisation has chosen the problem, product and process.

Practice position

AI assists. People decide.

Use approved systems, minimise information, check important output and keep accountable professional judgement human-led.

Involve people in the question

Start by asking whether the proposed problem is recognised by people affected and whether an AI intervention is acceptable. A technically efficient process can undermine dignity, trust or access if those perspectives enter too late.

Make participation accessible and supported

Use clear language, explain what is open to change and pay or support contributors in line with local policy. Include people with varied experiences, including those outside treatment and those affected by digital exclusion.

Share power through the lifecycle

Involvement should influence requirements, transparency, pilot boundaries, evaluation questions and the decision to continue, change or stop. Do not use a single testimonial as proof of acceptability.

Practical checklist

  • Involve people before selecting a product
  • Explain AI and the decision scope plainly
  • Include varied and less-heard perspectives
  • Support participation appropriately
  • Show how involvement changed the work
