ChatGPT for professional practice

ChatGPT can be a strong drafting and thinking partner. Its usefulness does not remove the need to check the account, information, sources and final work.

Practice position

AI assists. People decide.

Use approved systems, minimise information, check important output and keep accountable professional judgement human-led.

Where it can help

Useful lower-risk tasks include structuring a workshop, improving public text, creating a fictional case study, generating critical questions and drafting a report outline. The result improves when the prompt states the audience, purpose, source boundary, exclusions and required format.

Account and data controls

Features, retention and data controls can vary between consumer and organisational plans and can change. Do not infer professional approval from the presence of a privacy setting. Check current provider information and your organisation’s specific agreement and policy.

A safer working pattern

Start without personal data. Supply approved public sources when accuracy depends on evidence. Ask the model to label uncertainty and missing information. Then open primary sources, edit the draft and record human responsibility for the final version.

Practical checklist

  • Confirm the account and approved use
  • Use the least information necessary
  • State a source boundary
  • Check every consequential claim
  • Edit and approve the final work yourself
